Hygienic sensors for a reliable and efficient cleaning process
In food manufacturing, cleaning-in-place (CIP) systems are a standard component for ensuring reliable and efficient adherence to quality standards. The requirements placed on sensors used for process control are particularly high in the dairy industry. Anderson-Negele offers tailored solution for optimising the CIP process using turbidity and conductivity sensors.
The conventional CIP process
The CIP cleaning process consists of numerous interlinked steps. Plant operators need to take into account more than just the downtime of the system. Costs also arise from the consumption of water, chemicals and energy, as well as product loss. The sequence of the individual cleaning cycles is often still time-controlled. These fixed cleaning intervals may guarantee that the system is always cleaned properly, but more water, cleaning solution and time may be consumed than would actually be necessary for the medium being processed.
The solution is to automate control of the CIP system using turbidity and conductivity sensors.
Lowering water consumption – using chemicals efficiently
The average water consumption – depending on the product – is 1.5 to 3 litres per processed litre of milk. Half of this water is used for cleaning the system. A disadvantage of cleaning processes with fixed time intervals is that the maximum required cleaning duration must be used for each cleaning cycle. For example, the removal time for pasty media is considerably longer than for less viscous products. Therefore, when performing CIP cleaning after producing media with less viscosity, more water is used than necessary. This can be remedied through automated process control using the turbidity and conductivity sensors from Anderson-Negele. Water consumption at a large Canadian ice cream manufacturer was lowered from an average of 6,500 to 2,500 litres per cleaning cycle simply by deploying an intelligent phase detection system. The result was savings in water and wastewater costs. In addition, shorter cleaning cycles led to a lower consumption of acids and bases. The use of chemicals can be precisely controlled by measuring their concentrations using the ILM conductivity sensor, allowing their consumption to be further optimised.
Minimising product losses
Experience has shown that production-related losses in milk reach 0.5% in large dairies and 2.5% in small operations. It is particularly the plants with low levels of automation that experience significant losses in product. The precise and rapid detection of water-to-milk phases using the ITM-3 turbidity sensor leads to reductions in product losses of 5–10% in customer field projects.
Cleaning = downtime
A CIP cleaning process usually takes 60–90 minutes. A hygienic design of the entire system is therefore an important contributor to shortening the cleaning cycles and increasing the efficiency and productivity of the process. As a specialist for sensor systems in hygienic processes, we produce sensors and process connections that are optimally designed for the demanding requirements of the dairy industry and that ensure reliable and efficient cleaning of the system
You, too, can reduce the consumption of water and chemicals in your plant and keep product loss and downtime to a minimum.

We were asked by our customer to identify the root cause of a leak they were experiencing when using a Mouvex, a PSG brand SLS36 within their process line.
The ITS Servicing and Maintenance Team set about diagnosing the issue, finding a long-time worn seal to be the cause of the problem.
After changing the seal, giving the pump a thorough clean and performance test, it was sent back to our customer in optimum condition along with ongoing maintenance recommendations.

In fluid handling processes which use positive displacement pumps, you will know that protection should be put in place to prevent over-pressuring equipment, by means of a pressure relief valve. If a blockage occurs within the pipework or if fluid properties change to cause an increase in pressure, this could cause damage to the pump as well as associated valves, instrumentation and pipework. An expensive and time consuming problem to fix!
To protect against over-pressurisation most customers will have a spring loaded pressure relief valve, either on a bypass or going to drain to relieve any excess pressure within the system. With this method additional pipework fabrication is required to create the bypass which comes at an additional cost, and the spring loaded pressure relief valve often needs recertifying to ensure it is relieving at the required pressure and still maintaining protection of the system.
With this valve no additional bypass pipework is required and the valve connects directly to the suction and discharge pipes, saving on installation costs.
Additionally the relieving pressure can be set on site and doesn’t require a fixed pressure to be set in the factory, giving more flexibility for you to protect your systems.
The valve, as standard, can also be forced open during cleaning to act as a CIP bypass and reduce pressure loss experienced when sending CIP fluids through the positive displacement pump.
Finally the SSV Reverse Acting Valve is available in many sizes and with a range of feedback options for Digital, AS-I and IO-Link systems, so you will find the option most suitable to your application and requirements.
How it works
The design of the Reverse Acting SSV has the plug drop into the lower body as opposed to the Standard SSV where the plug lifts into the top body. By having the plug drop into the lower body, the plug area can be much smaller so pressure drop through the valve is not a concern. The suction pipework runs through the bottom body of the SSV and the discharge pipework runs through the top body.
Air is applied to the actuator as holding air to keep the valve closed. The pressure of the air corresponds to a pressure at which the valve opens at. This is not a direct relationship, so for example, 2Bar holding does not equal 2Bar opening, the holding pressure should be calculated by the pressure relief curves of each valve. If the process pressure exceeds that of the holding pressure of the valve then the plug will drop and product will recirculate to the suction pipework continuously until the pressure reduces below the set threshold. During CIP the air can then be applied to the opposite side of the actuator to force it open during cleaning.

Ice cream manufacturers are always looking to create a product that appeals to consumers through quality, taste and flavour.
There are many ways manufacturers can create a unique experience for ice cream-loving consumers. Product variations can include different flavours, such as vanilla, chocolate and fruit, and their corresponding colours and different textures. These textures can be achieved with certain additives or by varying the production process.
Fruit pulp can be added during or after the production process, e.g. fruit, chocolate or nut pieces can be used to decorate the ice cream. Other product variations include frozen yoghurt and low-fat ice cream. Low-fat ice cream can be produced as traditional ice cream or as ice milk, which is popular in temperate climates.
But how do you get the right ice cream blend?
Ice cream is made by simultaneously freezing and aerating a specially created liquid mixture containing fat, sugar, milk solids, an emulsifying agent, stabilisers, flavouring and colourings. The fat can be extracted from dairy products – milk, cream or butter – or from a non-dairy source.
The ice cream ingredients must be blended properly with high-quality, specialised equipment to ensure sufficient mixing of the liquid and dry ingredients to achieve a product that conforms to local market demands and high-shear mixers produce the best results!
