Industrial Trading Solutions Ltd embraced our ‘HAPPINESS’ core value for Mental Health Awareness week, to help break down some of the barriers surrounding emotional, psychological, and social well-being.

We pride ourselves on a great culture and family values at ITS, and want to ensure that all employees are Happy and Healthy, so this week we all took part in activities that encouraged staff to speak about their wellbeing and take time out for themselves.

We set up a ‘Room of Tranquillity’ for relaxation and reflection, a ‘Let’s Talk’ session where we all opened up about how stress manifests in us individually, and ideas to tackle these issues. We also provided fresh fruit to nurture our bodies as well as our minds, and added a little of what we love (Cheesecake and chocolate played a big part in that!).

Staff took part in a day for ‘Random Acts of Kindness’ and agreed we should continue this as a permanent activity going forward, and to top it all off, ITS gave all staff a ‘Bad Day Bonus’ – an extra half day holiday that can be used on that day where you arrive and work and just don’t feel it! Plus we announced the benefit of the Bupa initiative for wellbeing was now available to all staff for emotional and practical support via their 24 hour helpline.

It’s ok not to be ok, but it sure helps to have somebody to talk to when you are not in a good place.

Pipetite® – A new approach to an old problem.

Sealing pipes where they pass through walls or ceilings has been a source of aggravation and repeated maintenance costs for many years. And with all processing plants being required to control their processing environment to avoid contamination from moisture, pests and airborne particles, unsealed gaps in walls, floors and ceilings are a prime source for these issues. By sealing penetrations, facilities eliminate one such potential hazard, avoiding risks to health and ensuring a safe product.

So here we have a simple, hygienic, and inexpensive solution…

Pipetite® is a flexible, self-sealing, sanitary wall boot that seals around tubing or pipe penetrations.

It’s unique design eliminates the need for sealants and is easily adapted to fit most pipe or tube diameters.

Constructed of hygienic white silicone, 316 stainless steel and with a temperature rating of -40°c to 260°c, this totally self-sealing boot, fits snuggly to walls and ceilings, whilst giving superior flexibility for movement, without causing damage or breaking the seal.

Pipetite® also comes with pre-drilled holes for quick and easy installation, so no messy clean-ups – and it makes unsightly gaps look neat and tidy!

Pipetite® is great for:

  • Sealing new or existing piping
  • Covering openings in ceilings, walls, floors or areas of plastic or sheet metal.
  • Sealing around cables, tubing, hose, or wires
  • Seals that are exposed to sunlight, cleaning solutions or other harsh environments
  • Tube-in-tube floor or wall transitions
  • Where fire, pressure or other regulations need to be adhered to

It makes good sense to use digital load cells for controlling the mixing of ingredients and raw materials in food production. Digital load cells are more accurate and can communicate directly with the dosing equipment, which means that you can dose the individual raw materials and ingredients – both liquid and solid – very accurately in the mixer. This ensures a perfect mixing result – every time.

Quick and easy installation

The digital load cells from Eilersen are delivered to you through Industrial Trading Solutions Ltd as “Plug & Play”. This means that the load cells are delivered calibrated and ready for use. They simply need to be mounted under the legs of the mixer and connected to the instrumentation.

As these are digital load cells, the length of the cables has no bearing on the calibration of the load cell. You can therefore blot the short load cell cable to the desired length.

In the case of analogue load cells, you can’t shorten the cables without changing the calibration. The cable must therefore be rolled up and placed in a suitable place. It is inappropriate, and such a cable reel can quickly act as a dirt collector in an otherwise clean and hygienic food production.

Digital load cells can be read individually

When installing the weighing system, it is possible to read the weight supported by each individual load cell. Most mixers have four legs, which means that two or four load cells can be used under the mixer – depending on the required accuracy.

Of course, it is important that the weight of the mixer is distributed across all four legs so that the installation of the mixer is stable. The distribution of the weight across the legs can be read with the digital load cells, after which the length of the mixers legs can be adjusted. When using digital load cells, however, you do not need to have exactly the same weight on all mixer legs, as the load cell’s digital calibration adjusts for uneven distribution of the weight.

With high-shear mixers, strong lateral forces occur on the legs, and thus on the load cells, which is undesirable, as this will usually affect the accuracy and reliability of the weighing system. This however, does not apply to Eilersen’s digital load cells, which are extremely robust and unaffected by lateral forces, which is why these load cells are used by mixer manufacturers worldwide.

Designed according to EHEDG guidelines

Our digital load cells are designed to meet the guidelines for hygienic design as specified by EHEDG. This means that the load cells do not collect dirt and are easy to keep free of bacteria and residues.

As an option, we can supply 3A-approved tank legs for the mixer, which makes cleaning the mixer and the load cells even easier.

Load cells can also be retrofitted to existing mixers without load cells, and thus increase their precision and performance.

Reliable weighing solutions

All hardware for Eilersen’s weighing and dosing solutions are extremely reliable and particularly suitable for applications where there are demands for hygienic properties and easy cleaning of production equipment.

The weighing cells and weighing terminals have been developed to withstand harsh treatment in a typical production environment necessitating high-pressure cleaning with harsh detergents and disinfectants.

In heat transfer, getting the most energy-efficient and reliable performance comes down to having the ideal technology for your specific conditions.

Several factors can influence what type of plate heat exchanger offers the best fit for a specific duty. These can include type of media and refrigerant, design pressure, capacity needs, efficiency demands, serviceability requirements, and many more.

Based on the specific needs and conditions of your operation, Industrial Trading Solutions can support you to select from a comprehensive range of solutions from Alfa Laval.

Alfa Laval solutions enable food, beverage, pharmaceutical, dairy, and personal care industry customers to benefit from many of the most advanced technologies available, in full compliance with various regulations and other exceptional hygiene requirements. Decades have been spent developing plate heat exchanger technologies that enable higher efficiency and help businesses optimise energy use in their processes.

Every year, newly installed Alfa Laval plate heat exchangers enable customers to save 50GW of energy. That’s the same amount of energy that it takes to annually heat 10 million European homes.

That 50GW also translates to a 25-million-tonne reduction in global CO2 emissions, or what’s emitted every year by the city of Paris.

We explore a selection of the comprehensive range of Heat Exchanger options available through Industrial Trading Solutions for hygienic applications:

Brazed Heat Exchangers

Our copper-brazed plate heat exchangers are a compact, efficient and maintenance-free solution for heating, cooling, evaporation and condensing in numerous applications. Each unit is designed for duty optimisation, with a range of unique features that ensure both superior thermal performance and maximum reliability. This enables the longest possible service life – even under conditions with extremely high design pressures.

  • Lightweight brazed construction offers much greater thermal efficiency and 75% smaller footprint than comparable shell-and-tubes.
  • The flexible DynaStatic distribution system in AC models enables higher efficiency in any evaporator duty and with any refrigerant
  • Alfa Laval’s FlexFlow plate design provides channel asymmetry that can be tailored to fit the application
  • We help you select the optimal pressing depth, plate pattern and configuration for your application
  • An ideal solution for use with natural refrigerants, thanks to the compact footprint, optimised plate design and high design pressure

With a robust and reliable construction, Alfa Laval’s comprehensive range of brazed plate technology offers a smart alternative to traditional heat exchangers.

Fusion-bonded Plate Heat Exchangers

AlfaFusion bonding technology creates highly efficient, compact heat exchangers made entirely of stainless steel. Virtually maintenance free and capable of handling extremely high pressures and temperatures, our fusion-bonded heat exchangers are an ideal heat transfer solution for challenging applications. These include duties with high cleanliness demands, with aggressive media such as ammonia, or where copper or nickel pose contamination risks.

  • 100% stainless steel construction means 100% recyclability
  • Resists corrosion from aggressive media and process fluids
  • Prevents nickel or copper-contamination when working with drinking water or any other hygienic fluid
  • AlfaFusion technology enables higher temperature resistance than traditional brazed heat exchangers with same high-pressure capabilities
  • Optimised plate design with asymmetric channel configuration provides maximum efficiency in demanding heating and cooling applications

AlfaFusion is a breakthrough manufacturing technique that combines improved hygiene and corrosion resistance with the high efficiency and compact footprint of a brazed plate heat exchanger. By enabling a full stainless steel construction, our fusion-bonded AlfaNova heat exchangers can be used in installations normally reserved for conventional semi-welded and welded technologies. They are also a confident choice when the prime focus is on cleanliness, such as in clean water refrigeration and tap water heating systems.

Gasketed Plate-and-Frame Heat Exchangers

Our gasketed plate heat exchangers are optimising heat transfer by large surfaces of corrugated plates drawing heat from one gas or liquid to the other. The high efficiency and an outstanding reliability in a compact design, offers an investment with the most attractive TCO over the product life time. Not to forget the energy saving capabilities and low environmental footprint.

  • Highest thermal efficiency and close temperature approach
  • Compact units – space saving, easy to service and maintain
  • Maximum uptime – less fouling, stress, wear and corrosion
  • Flexible – easy to adapt to changed duty requirements

The Hygienic range for food, beverage and pharma applications means you buy into reduced cost of ownership and increased efficiency and safety.

Shell-and-Tube Heat Exchangers

Our shell and tube heat exchangers are used in many comfort and industry applications for heating and cooling fluids. They consist of a shell with traditional plain tubes or enhanced surface tubes for high thermal performance. The fluids can be liquids or gases, one of which flows inside the tubes while the other flows outside the tubes within the shell. There are single-phase or two-phase heat exchangers, and the latter is used to either boil or condense fluids.

The Pharmaline offers superior materials and hygienic design, embodying decades of experience in pharma.

  • Double-tube sheet(DTS) avoids risk of cross-contamination
  • Very low risk for cracks and thermal fatigue as U-shaped tubes accommodate thermal expansion
  • Fully drainable heat exchanger, no dead areas and seamless, smooth crevice-free design with max 0,5µm surface roughness
  • Fully customizable owing to smart flexible design of feet and mounting options
  • Small footprint – U-tubes decrease the length of our hygienic heat exchanger by half

Our Viscoline is for viscous food, offering a series of highly efficient heat exchangers that have been designed to handle your food processes in the most gentle manner.

Tamsin has joined ITS as Regional Sales Manager and brings with her a wealth of knowledge and experience in process flow products, having spent her career in the industry.

See Tamsin’s Intro Video Here:

Tamsin started working at Worthington Simpson’s as an apprentice in 1998 as the first female apprentice the company had ever taken on. (Worthington Simpson’s became IDP, which then became Flowserve). She did her apprenticeship as a fitter, building horizontal split case pumps, giving her a great introduction into what would become a constant in her life.

Working her way up into the sales office as an Applications Engineer within Flowserve, Tamsin flourished in the sales and marketing environment as the youngest person worldwide to have worked in the department at the time.

Moving on to work at KSB Pumps and Valves and then spending some time at Northern Pumps, Tamsin found herself back at Flowserve for a second time around, but on the Worcester Ball Valve side of the company. She was made redundant from Flowserve in 2016 so took up a position at Musk Engineering as a Sales Engineer, selling fluid process project solutions, until being head hunted for a position at Industrial Trading Solutions Ltd this year.

For over 20 years, Tamsin has built her expertise in process fluid handling products and has built great relationships with customers in the Food, Beverage, Chemical, Pharmaceutical, Power, Oil & Gas industries, so ITS are over the moon to have her on the team to help our customers with their application requirements.

Tamsin lives in Newark as she has done for most of her lifer and is a very active person, spending time with her partner of 11 years, Steve, at the gym most evenings where they can.

We wish Tamsin all the best in her new role and hope you get to meet her very soon – if you haven’t already done so!

Welcome to the team Tamsin 🙂

An innovative initiative by the Competence Development team in Kolding is tapping into the competitive spirit in Alfa Laval’s sales companies and master distributors to boost sizing and selection skills to ensure that Alfa Laval offer the most competitive pump solution which often is also the most sustainable solution from an energy efficiency perspective.

For a year now, Product Specialist Kamilla Poulsen and her colleagues have been setting a monthly design challenge – Design of the Month – which invites more than 120 engineers and technical experts around the world to take part in a friendly competition to select the optimal hygienic pump for an assignment based on a real-life, customer-specific scenario.

“The objective is to pick the right hygienic pump for each assignment and this means the most cost-efficient pump in terms of the purchase price and also in terms of running costs,” explains Kamilla. “When we factor in the pump’s energy efficiency, the cheapest pump in terms of purchase price is not always the cheapest pump. Differing global energy prices can have a significant impact on selecting the best possible pump for each application.”

The champion of champions for 2021 was Nick Willetts from Industrial Training Solutions – Alfa Laval’s master distributor in the UK. Nick won the competition three times during the year. His winning submissions of twin screw, centrifugal and circumferential piston pumps narrowly beat Christian Belletti, from Tekna Parma, in Italy, who took the top spot twice.

Feedback from the webinars in which the winning entries are presented, clearly shows that this monthly challenge is facilitating competence development and learning across the organisation.

“The standard has been very good, and we have seen it improving over time,” says Kamilla. “People are learning from the assignments and they are also becoming more familiar with our tools and configurators. In the beginning, some people had difficulties using Joules, for example, but pretty much everybody is using it now.”

Submissions responding to the monthly assignments have also enabled the Competence Development team to identify future training needs and the interest and engagement demonstrated by the regular participants, has prompted discussions on the possibilities of widening the challenge. “Perhaps including both pump and valve selection for a small system design to make it more process related,” says Kamilla.

Industrial Trading Solutions send in submissions to the competition every month from across their technical staff.

”We encourage our technical staff to take part in the design of the month competition as it helps to keep us on top of the latest technology and products, whilst also providing invaluable feedback and training opportunities along the way. We are extremely proud that Nick has shown his outstanding capabilities and knowledge in hygienic pump technology throughout the last twelve months and have recognised Nick alongside Alfa Laval for his efforts.” Andrew Jeans (Managing Director of Industrial Trading Solutions Ltd) commented.
