The industry relies on the smooth running of complex systems. Small problems with pumps or valves can have serious implications for efficiency, maintenance, and downtime. Thankfully, there are tools such as the NPSH that can help, but what is it, and why is it important?
NPSH: A Quick Guide
Net Positive Suction Head (NPSH) is the measurement required to prevent the build-up of bubbles in centrifugal pumps. These pumps have to deal with multiple fluid densities, creating a range of potential vaporisation problems that result in flashing and cavitation events. Cavitation occurs when bubbles collapse, creating vibrations that cause metal fatigue.
NPSH inaccuracies are estimated to cost industries billions in downtime and repairs. The operational inefficiencies that they cause are also a significant contributor to environmental damage.
💭What is NPSH-R?
Net Positive Suction Head Required (NPSH-R) indicates that the manufacturer has provided the minimum suction pressure. For this, rigorous product testing has to be undertaken using defined and trusted methodologies. The design of the device and the quality of the materials must also be assured.
If the NPSH-R is accurate, both flashing and cavitation can become the rarity rather than the norm. For the client, this is an important asset in the quest for optimum, cost-efficient plant maintenance.
💭What is NPSH-A?
Net Positive Suction Head Available (NPSH-A) is the suction-side pressure with the vapour pressure subtracted. If the pressure is too low, bubbling and cavitation will occur. To determine the correct NPSH-A, which is usually between 0.5 and 1m, the NPSH-R needs to be accurate. Other factors, such as the ambient temperature, the weather, and friction losses on the surface of the metal also need to be considered.
The NPSH-A is a vital calculation for preventing flashing and cavitation, therefore prolonging the life of the parts.
How can I guarantee NPSH?
The ideal Net Positive Suction Head value depends upon the accuracy of the NPSH-R. If the NPSH-R is wrong, the NPSH-A will never be correctly calculated. The complex testing process demands a manufacturing company that has both the investment and authenticity to ensure that NPSH-R testing is carried out properly. The overall quality of the part also matters as the NPSH-R value can change over time if the metal is substandard or the design is inadequate.

In the world of processing plants, efficiency and hygiene are critical to successful operations. From food and beverage manufacturing to pharmaceuticals and cosmetics, the industry demands high standards in cleanliness, reduced waste, and streamlined processes. This is where LIAG pigging systems shine, offering essential benefits for modern processing facilities.
💭What is Pigging?
Pigging is a process used in pipelines where a “pig” (a projectile or cleaning tool) is pushed through to clear out residual product, clean the pipe, or perform other maintenance tasks. This “pig” is usually made of a flexible material, like silicone, and fits tightly within the pipeline, allowing it to sweep through and remove remnants left from previous batches.
One of the most significant advantages of LIAG® pigging systems is the increase in product recovery. Typically, after a batch is processed, a portion of the product remains in the pipeline, leading to substantial wastage. LIAG® pigging systems can recover up to 99.5% of this residual product, translating to higher yields, reduced costs, and less waste. In industries where products are high in value, like cosmetics or pharmaceuticals, this recovery directly impacts profitability.
Sanitation is non-negotiable in food, beverage, and pharmaceutical processing. LIAG® pigging systems play a vital role in maintaining hygiene by efficiently removing product residues between batch changes and reducing the risk of contamination. This is especially important for facilities handling different products within the same pipeline. By ensuring a clean system after each cycle, LIAG® pigging systems reduce the likelihood of cross-contamination, helping plants meet regulatory standards and ensure customer safety.
Traditional cleaning methods for pipelines can be time-consuming and require large volumes of water and chemicals. LIAG® pigging systems cut down on these requirements by performing a significant portion of the cleaning process mechanically. This reduced cleaning time allows for faster changeovers between batches, increasing production capacity. Additionally, less reliance on water and chemicals aligns with sustainable practices, a growing focus in modern manufacturing.
Efficiency is the name of the game in any processing plant. LIAG® pigging systems help plants minimise downtime due to faster cleaning and quicker product changeovers. Less downtime translates to more production time and, ultimately, higher productivity. Moreover, since the system lowers product loss and reduces water and chemical usage, operational costs are significantly reduced.
With heightened awareness around sustainability, reducing waste is more important than ever. By recovering more products and using fewer cleaning resources, LIAG® pigging systems support environmental initiatives and allow processing plants to meet stricter regulations on waste and emissions.
Wrapping Up: A Smart Investment for Processing Plants
LIAG® pigging systems are a smart investment, offering tangible benefits for processing plants across industries. By maximising product recovery, enhancing hygiene, reducing water and chemical use, and minimising operational downtime, these systems contribute significantly to efficiency, profitability, and sustainability. Processing plants that adopt LIAG® pigging systems can expect smoother operations, cost savings, and a cleaner, greener footprint—key advantages in today’s competitive and environmentally conscious market.

In the food production industry, maintaining stringent sanitary standards is essential to ensure the safety and quality of food products. Two key organisations, the European Hygienic Engineering & Design Group (EHEDG) and 3-A Sanitary Standards, Inc., provide guidelines and standards that promote hygienic equipment design and practices across the sector.
Industrial Trading Solutions Ltd (ITS Ltd) specialises in delivering equipment and solutions that adhere to these critical standards. In this article, we explore the EHEDG and 3-A sanitary standards for food production, with a particular focus on their relevance to British and European practices.
1. EHEDG (European Hygienic Engineering & Design Group)
EHEDG is a leading European organisation dedicated to advancing hygienic engineering and design principles for the food and beverage industries. Primarily operating across Europe, the organisation develops guidelines aimed at preventing food contamination through hygienic equipment design, installation, and maintenance.
Some key elements of EHEDG sanitary standards include:
• Hygienic Design Criteria: EHEDG guidelines prioritise the use of equipment with smooth surfaces, proper drainage, minimal dead spaces, and an overall design that promotes easy cleaning and sanitisation. This helps prevent microbial growth and cross-contamination.
• Material Selection: EHEDG mandates the use of food-grade materials that are resistant to corrosion, chemicals, and high temperatures. These materials ensure the safety and integrity of food products during processing and equipment cleaning.
• Validation and Compliance: To verify compliance with EHEDG standards, equipment undergoes rigorous testing and validation. Products that meet the criteria are awarded EHEDG certification, providing assurance of their suitability for use in hygienic food processing environments.
ITS Ltd works closely with manufacturers who adhere to EHEDG guidelines, offering a wide range of equipment designed for optimal hygiene. Whether it’s creating hygienic process lines, choosing suitable valves and fittings, or implementing sanitary pumping solutions, ITS Ltd ensures that their clients meet the strict European standards for food hygiene.
2. 3-A Sanitary Standards
The 3-A Sanitary Standards are widely respected, particularly in the United States, but also recognised internationally for promoting hygienic design in the food, beverage, and pharmaceutical industries. While the organisation is based in the US, many global manufacturers, including those in the UK and Europe, incorporate 3-A standards to maintain high levels of hygiene in food production.
Key aspects of 3-A Sanitary Standards include:
• Material Compatibility: Equipment must be constructed from materials that are compatible with food products and cleaning agents, resistant to corrosion, and easy to maintain.
• Hygienic Design: 3-A standards emphasise equipment designs that minimise areas where food or contaminants can accumulate. Smooth surfaces, rounded edges, and effective drainage are fundamental requirements to facilitate thorough cleaning.
• Cleanability: Equipment must be designed for easy disassembly to allow for effective cleaning and sanitisation. Critical areas, such as seals, joints, and gaskets, should be easily accessible to ensure that every part of the system can be properly cleaned.
• Verification and Certification: Equipment that complies with 3-A standards can undergo certification, confirming that it meets the strict sanitary guidelines. This certification ensures that equipment has been tested and approved according to the organisation’s rigorous sanitary requirements.
Although 3-A Sanitary Standards originate from the US, many British and European food production facilities incorporate 3-A certified equipment to align with global hygiene practices. ITS Ltd offers a range of products, including pumps, valves, and processing systems, that meet 3-A certification, providing solutions that support the highest standards of food safety and quality.
In food production, compliance with both EHEDG and 3-A sanitary standards is crucial for maintaining food safety, product quality, and regulatory adherence. Industrial Trading Solutions Ltd (ITS Ltd) is a leading provider of certified equipment and expert guidance, offering solutions that meet the stringent hygiene requirements of both European and international standards. By integrating EHEDG and 3-A guidelines, food businesses can enhance the integrity of their products and build consumer trust in a highly competitive industry where safety and quality are paramount.
