We recently had an Alfa LavalOpti Lobe 23 pump sent to us for inspection after reports that the rotors were not moving—indicating a possible bearing failure. Upon closer examination, it turns out there was more to the story! 🔍
What we found:
•Extra seals had been added, or old ones were left in place, which created unnecessary complications.
•The back casing showed signs of damage, and both rotors had also suffered.
However, no challenge is too big for our experienced service engineering team! 💪
After removing the extra seals and addressing the damage, we gave the pump a full service, which included:
✨ Clearing off all the damages from the back casing and rotors.
✨ A complete clean-down of the entire pump system.
TheOpti Lobe 23 is now back in prime condition, ready to perform once again, thanks to our skilled team. 🏆 Another great save—done by yours truly!
Our technical ITS team recently took a day out to attend a refresher training session with Alfa Laval in Camberley. The seminar covered the three main Positive Displacement Pump technologies, diving deep into how their key features cater to different hygienic application needs.
Did you know❓Whether you’re handling delicate, abrasive, or highly viscous products, PD pumps can manage everything from 1cp upwards—including products with particulates up to 47mm.
This seminar was a valuable opportunity to understand the efficiency and versatility of PD pumps, depending on media factors, and how to make the best choice for your process needs. At ITS we hold ourselves accountable for keeping up to date and refreshing our current product knowledge – to deliver the correct information to customers for their pre-existing or new hygienic processing pump equipment.
We want to thank Alfa Laval experts for an insightful PD Pumps Application Seminar led by Russ Kelly, Leonardo Morabito, Karina Kwan, and Patricio Sanhueza.

What sensors does Anderson-Negele provide for the beverage industry?
Fermentation vessels:
Depending on the type of fermentation (yeast, mash, cold, or warm), and the process (open or closed vessels), our sensors account for vessel wall depth in insulated tanks and monitor pressure in pressure fermentation vessels.
Different systems are used for various packaging, and sensors monitor cleaning and quality.
Magnetic-Inductive Flow Sensors: Control keg filling.
Conductivity Sensors: Ensure that the correct product reaches the container and maintain CIP (Cleaning In Place) system cleanliness.
CIP systems:
CIP systems ensure hygienic production. CIP systems for a beverage production can be central or decentralised. For improved efficiency, the return flow of the media can be monitored for the degree of contamination by analysis sensors. This allows the expensive cleaners to be automatically returned to the batch tank when the degree of contamination is low, and low-contaminated rinse water can be re-used for pre-rinsing in the next process
Conductivity Measurement: Monitors and controls cleaner concentration automatically, allowing resource efficiency during the cleaning process.
How can sensing technology reduce food waste?
For producers, preventing food waste has both ecological and financial benefits. Every litre of wasted product represents a lost opportunity and adds costs to wastewater treatment. Intelligent instrumentation helps prevent losses in areas such as phase transitions, process control, level monitoring, and CIP automation.
What advantages does sensing technology offer in batch or continuous processes?
Batch and continuous processes each have unique requirements. In batch processes, factors such as vibration resistance and tank insulation are key. In continuous processes, sensors provide real-time insights, offering short response times and automatic adaptation to media changes.
Our tip: With a wide range of sensor types and configurations, we can provide the right technology for your specific requirements.
What does “Sanitary by Design” mean?
Anderson-Negele products are designed exclusively for food applications, meeting the highest hygiene standards such as 3-A and EHEDG. This ensures maximum product safety, ease of cleaning, and peace of mind for your customers.
Our tip: Explore our CLEANadapt and FLEXadapt systems for sanitary installation and operation, which can even be retrofitted.
What can digitisation with IO-Link offer?
Many of our sensors are equipped with Flex-Hybrid Technology, which allows both digital IO-Link and analogue communication. Even in analogue setups, sensors can be programmed easily via software, and settings can be transferred across devices.
Our tip: Flex-Hybrid Technology simplifies installation and commissioning, and if you switch to digital IO-Link later, the sensors are ready without the need for replacements.
What benefits do remote sensors offer?
Our remote sensors separate the measuring device from the electronics unit, protecting the electronics from vibrations and high temperatures. This increases sensor longevity and provides convenient access for reading or programming.
Our tip: Remote sensors allow for easy monitoring of all processes and extend service life by protecting sensitive electronics.

With this cutting-edge equipment, Coca-Cola continues to demonstrate that sustainability and innovation go hand in hand, and you too could benefit with installation of a Mouvex, a PSG brand Eccentric Disc Pump.
HISTON SWEET SPREADS LIMITED experienced an issue during their jam and marmalade production when a metallic foreign object entered their Mouvex, a PSG brand SLS36 pump. The object became lodged between the disc and cylinder, causing significant damage. The force exerted by the motor bent the wing of the disc and stretched the double wall bellows. As a result, the disc and cylinder lost contact, preventing the pump from functioning properly and causing a knocking noise during operation.
To resolve the issue, we conducted a full strip-down of the pump. We replaced the damaged bellows, transmission block, piston, and cylinder. After a comprehensive service and testing, the pump was returned to our customer in full working order, ensuring their production process could resume smoothly.
This swift intervention minimised downtime, allowing Histon Sweet Spreads to get back to business as usual, creating the sweet delights we all know and love!

The Alfa Laval OS twin screw pump operates based on the principle of intermeshing twin screws to move fluids through the pump chamber. Here’s a breakdown of how the Alfa Laval OS twin screw pump works:
Twin Screw Design: The pump consists of two intermeshing screws, usually with a unique helical profile, rotating inside a tightly sealed pump chamber. These screws have opposing threads that create cavities or “pockets” between them as they rotate.
Fluid Entry: The fluid enters the pump through the inlet port located at one end of the pump chamber. As the screws rotate, they create a continuous suction effect, drawing the fluid into the cavities between the screws.
Fluid Conveyance: As the screws continue to rotate, the fluid trapped in the cavities moves axially along the length of the screws. The helical profiles of the screws push the fluid towards the outlet port at the opposite end of the pump chamber.
Sealing and Compression: The intermeshing of the screws creates a tight seal between the screw threads and the pump chamber walls. This seal prevents fluid from leaking back into the inlet port and ensures efficient conveyance without backflow or slippage. The fluid is progressively compressed and pressurised as it moves towards the outlet.
Discharge: The pressurised fluid reaches the outlet port, where it is discharged from the pump at the desired flow rate and pressure. The pump’s design allows for precise control overflow rates and pressures, making it suitable for a wide range of applications.
Self-Priming and Dry-Running Capabilities: Alfa Laval OS twin screw pumps often feature self-priming capabilities, allowing them to draw in fluids from low-pressure sources or even from dry suction conditions. Additionally, some models are designed to handle intermittent dry running without damage, enhancing their reliability and versatility.
Cleaning and Maintenance: The pump’s design typically includes features for easy disassembly and cleaning, such as quick-opening covers and access to internal components. This facilitates routine maintenance tasks, reduces downtime, and ensures hygienic operation in industries with stringent cleanliness requirements.
The Alfa Laval OS twin screw pump utilises the intermeshing action of twin screws to efficiently and precisely move fluids through a sealed pump chamber. This design results in reliable and consistent fluid conveyance, making the pump suitable for a wide range of hygienic applications. Find out more:
